Our Story
Where We Began
Breanna and Yuji, the owners of Kinsu Chocolates, began making chocolates for one another at the start of their relationship in 2019. They celebrated (and continue to celebrate) Valentine's Day and White Day; a Japanese holiday, where the man returns the favour for what they received on Valentine's three fold (March 14th). One year, they made each other a hundred chocolates, far more than they could eat themselves. So they shared them with friends and everyone who tried them urged them to sell them and start a business. After two years of farmers markets, they opened up the Kinsu Chocolates storefront and in the same year planned their wedding.

Breanna worked as a Veterinary Technician and has her BSC in Terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. She has always been an avid baker, preparing gourmet cakes and pastries for friends and family at a young age. Her background provided her with the expertise needed to understand the art and science of tempering chocolates.
Yuji has a BA in Studio Art and English and a PBDE (Education Degree). His entrepreneurial spirt and aesthetic eye have formed our brands identity. He is also an avid woodworker and designed and built our entire shop himself.
Yuji and Breanna have always complemented each other and without the two of them, the business would not be where it is today. We hope that the love we share, and the love we pour into our chocolates shows and can be a reminder for all that happiness really is the colour of chocolates.
Our Name
Before ever making chocolates, Breanna and Yuji practiced the artform of Kintsugi (repairing broken pottery with gold). Whenever a dish would crack or break, they would repair it, honoring its history. Kintsugi represents the belief in showing the beauty of an object's life. It follows the tradition of wabi-sabi, and finds beauty in imperfection. Our name, Kinsu, derived itself from this but with a twist. “Kin” in Japanese means gold, and “suru” means to do. As such, our name, Kinsu Chocolates, means that we are making golden chocolates!

We love to share our story and passion for chocolates. If you have any questions or simply want to connect, send us a message. We would love to hear from you!
